From the CEO’s Desk
The Texas Hospital Insurance Exchange offers a number of complimentary educational opportunities to our subscribers. From the popular Hot Topics Workshops to in-service programs tailored to hospitals’ individual needs, these opportunities are designed to keep you educated and informed so you can create the safest workplace possible. In order to share our knowledge with you, though, we have to know the latest news and issues ourselves. That’s why THIE staff take time throughout the year to attend conferences and meetings. We make sure we are up-to-date on emerging trends affecting Texas hospitals so we can pass along what we’ve learned to you and together manage risks and provide safe patient care environments.
If at any time you’d like a member of the THIE team to come out to your hospital for a complimentary customized program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help you in any way we can.

Subscriber Spotlight: Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital, Kenedy
Staff from Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital in Kenedy relax at the end of the Camo 5K Sept. 19. The hospital sponsored the run, which was part of the Lonesome Dove Fest in nearby Karnes City. The annual event allows the Karnes City Rotary Club to fund scholarships for local high school students and contribute to other community efforts. In addition to the run, the Lonesome Dove Fest featured a parade, a BBQ cook-off, shooting events and a stick horse rodeo.
Workers’ Compensation Rates Drop Once Again
The Texas Hospital Insurance Exchange once again is lowering its workers’ compensation coverage rates, this time by 10 percent. THIE already is recognized as a “High Performer” by the Texas Department of Insurance Division of Workers’ Compensation – an honor bestowed upon only 5 percent of workers’ compensation insurance companies – and this latest rate reduction is only one of many reasons rural hospitals in Texas continue to turn to THIE for their workers’ compensation needs.
THIE regularly monitors its rates and services to ensure it is providing the best value to subscribers. If you have any questions on these changes, contact Liz Jennings at 512/451-5525.

Keep an eye on the THIE website for more information in the coming months.
Get Involved in THA’s Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Campaign
On Oct. 1, the Texas Hospital Association launched a four-month consumer-focused campaign to increase enrollment of eligible but uninsured Texans in the health insurance marketplace. The goal of the campaign – Insure Health. Insure Texas – is to educate consumers on the affordability of coverage options ahead of the start of open enrollment on Nov. 1 and reduce the number of uninsured in Texas.
THA has developed a number of tools and resources based on evidence from the previous two enrollment periods that messages focused on the affordability of coverage are the most effective. Member hospitals are asked to use the creative materials, including digital, print, television and radio ads, and co-brand them, if desired, in their specific markets. These materials are available on the THA website. For more information or if you have any questions, contact Lance Lunsford or Stephanie Limb.
